I haven’t been able to post anything in the last month or so because my human has been having problems with tendonitis in both wrists, so she couldn’t type very well. First it was the right wrist, and she wore this black brace and it felt weird when she petted me. Then that wrist started feeling better, but the left wrist started to hurt a lot because she was using it too much. She actually went to the doctor this time, and came home with a very scary, long, black brace for her wrist and arm. She couldn’t even take it off to give me Reiki on my belly at night when we climb into bed together, so I moved over to her other side. Gotta get my nightly Reiki.
Anyway, a bill that would ban declawing cats is making its way through the California Assembly, and I wanted to talk about that. I was declawed a long time ago, before my current human adopted me. It changed me forever. Cats like and need to scratch, but I can’t do it so much anymore because my front feet always hurt. They hurt so much that using the litter box was painful, because I couldn’t scratch in there the way I like to. I used to pee anywhere that was soft, which I think is why my old owners took me and my sister Mika to the shelter. She used the litter box even though it hurt her, too, but she was a rule follower. I’m kinda not.
Anyway, when I was adopted and came to this house, the litter was still painful. It was this pine pellet stuff that was round and hard to step on. I decided to pee on the couch instead. My human wasn’t happy, but she didn’t figure out why right away, so I kept using the couch. One day, I decided to try to explain it to her. I jumped on her bed early in the morning before she was awake, and peed on her feet. Not only did she get up right away, she started doing research. She realized that I was relieving myself, not just marking my territory. She put two and two together, and bought me wonderful new cat litter. It smells like a cat (Mom calls it “pheromones”), and it has very small granules because it’s meant for a kitten’s tender feet. It is so much less painful for me to use. I’m so glad my human was smart enough to figure that out.
So I hope this declaw ban goes into effect, so cats in California can be happy, healthy, and scratching the way they were meant to. And if I could drive, this would be me in the picture, delivering scratching posts to cats everywhere. After I take a nap.
My name is Zack. My human is Chris. She says I'm about 16, so I'm kind of a senior cat. I don't act my age sometimes. I have things I want to say, so she said I could do it here. I can't type, so she has to do it for me. She says more info is coming, whatever that means.
